Designing Design by Kenya Hara

designing-design.jpg

Articulating and demonstrating the epitome in modern design
This is an extraordinarily beautiful book in which scores of works by graphic designers are presented, commended upon and sometimes explained by famed Japanese graphic designer Kenya Hara.

There is no way I can do justice to either the beauty of this book or to the insightful text by Hara or to the range of design displayed. You have to see the book yourself to really appreciate the fact that, of all the gorgeous designs presented within–and there are scores of them–none is more gorgeous than the book itself. I think anybody in the book business might want to take this book in hand and peruse it as an example of what can be done in book design.

The Function of Ornament

function.jpg

The days when ornament was considered anathema to any kind of intellectual progress have long disappeared. While fashion, product and interior designers have spent the last decade embracing ornament in all its forms, architecture has been slow to catch up.

The Function of Ornament is a primer for the digital age, with Foreign Office Architects’ Farshid Moussavi demonstrating how the computer is as fine a form generator as any pattern book.

Naoto Fukasawa

naoto.jpg

Fukasawa is a master of Japanese minimalist design, translating the simple forms and tendency towards minimal decoration of the country’s traditional craftsman into the arena of modern consumer products, most notably for the manufacturer Muji. Often, Fukasaw’s best ideas come from the combination of two or more familiar forms, giving a functional twist to an already basic item, like his ‘Light with a Dish’ that ends the age old problem of where to put your house keys.

After working with IDEO, the designer established his own consultancy in 2003. In recent years he has established the term ‘super normal’, along with Jasper Morrison, to describe unpretentiously designed objects that have achieved a state of quiet perfection.

This hardworking reference book is the second volume in Rockport’s “Pattern and Palette” series. Like the first, it is an invaluable tool for art directors, designers and students working in the fashion, product and graphic design fields, as well as anyone in the business of visual communication. With close to 1000 new patterns, “Pattern and Palette Sourcebook 2″ is a desktop library of colours and patterns that address the professional’s needs in working with harmonies and contrasts. The book also demonstrates ways of creating designs that are distinctly unique from one another and yet hold together in a group. Also included is an interactive CD-ROM that contains the patterns featured, where users can choose patterns, experiment with colours and print out a sample of the patterns for reference.
