Volkswagen has launched a microsite, volkswagen2028.com, showing three computer-generated concepts hinting at its plans for the future. The One is a single-seater pod-style vehicle; the Ego carries two, and the Room - looking as if it could be based on the Space Up! concept - is a mini-people-carrier which can drive itself. The three concepts have holographic interface systems, and use car-to-car communications technology for accident avoidance and free-flowing progress through traffic, and are powered by electricity or biofuels.

pete-bethune-eco-boat.jpg

The fastest eco boat on the planet will attempt to break the round the world speed record using fuel made from human fat. Pete Bethune, the New Zealand skipper of Earthrace, said the attempt to circumnavigate the globe would begin from Valencia in Spain on March 1 next year. Bethune and his wife mortgaged their house and sold everything they own to help make the project happen, while continuing to seek support from sponsors. Record breaking attempt: Earthrace will attempt to circumnavigate the globe running 100 per cent biodiesel, and with a net zero carbon-footprint.

bmw_gina.jpg

Instead of a metal or plastic body, BMW’s latest concept, the GINA Light Visionary Model, drapes a flexible fabric material over a moveable wire mesh frame, creating a nearly seamless surface that can alter its form at the whim of the driver. If you’re feeling frisky, you can raise the tail like an angry dog, bulge the fenders as if you’ve injected them with steroids and reshape the sides of the car to transform it from a sleek roadster into an intimidating racer.

No need to lift the hood to get a look at the engine — it opens from the centre like Hulk Hogan tearing off his T-shirt. Even the seats and the dashboard can be customized under their smooth surfaces to fit the desires of the occupants.

Volkswagen’s Autotürme

volkswagen_storage_towers1.jpg

Volkswagen’s Autotürme, or car towers, are distinguishing features of the Autostadt. The transparent cylindrical buildings rise 48 meters or 150 feet above the grounds, and they’re linked by a fully automated delivery system to both the Volkswagen factory and the KundenCenter (where VW customers pick up their new cars).

Well Hanyoung Lee’s concept plasma laser beams may be just the thing to halt those who have a problem finding the brakes. Now all we have to do is just find a way to zap those who try to intimidate pedestrians by constantly revving their engines.
